If this sounds like you, then you're in the right place!

In this blog, I’m going to delve into explaining all about Reiki, what it is, how it could possibly be a solution for you in your own life and what happens when you come for a session with me.

If you do have any questions or feel like anything is missing, please feel free to comment underneath - that way you can see others' comments and my responses to them.

An overview of Reiki

So to start off, we will go into a little bit of background. Reiki is an Energy Healing practice which comes from Japan. It was discovered by a man named Dr. Mikao Usui. Usui's intense spiritual practices culminated in a profound revelation which then led to the practice now commonly called Reiki. This realisation occurred to him around 1922.

While the realisation may have occurred around 100years ago to Dr. Usui, today we know that Energy healing is actually based on scientific facts. Nowadays Quantum physics is proving that everything is made of energy. Studies have shown that everything in this Universe is composed of molecules that are vibrating at various frequencies.

Our bodies also contain these molecules. They are constantly vibrating and radiating positive or negative ions, balanced or unbalanced and opened or closed frequencies. When our organs are misaligned energetically and radiating low-vibrational frequencies, it can materialize into physical ailments for each of us, such as pain, sickness and dis-ease (disorder in the body)

"Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it" -Albert Einstein

Our bodies have Energetic Systems- also known as Chakras

So as our bodies are composed of Energetic frequencies, we also have an Energetic system which contains numerous Spinning wheels which work like little vacuums pulling in and clearing out energy. These spinning wheels- also known as Chakras in Sanskrit are located in different parts of the energetic body and the body is contained within an energetic field called the Aura- which is about 2-3 feet thick.

So then what is Reiki?

In short- Rei stands for Universal or lifeforce and Ki stands for energy, so Reiki is Universal life force Energy.

When seeking a definition from a deeper explanation, Rei can be defined as the higher intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the whole Universe. Rei is the subtle wisdom that permeates everything, both animate and inanimate. This subtle wisdom guides the evolution of all creation ranging from the unfolding of galaxies to the development of life on a human level. It is directing all of the changes around us and it is available to help us in times of need and to act as a source of guidance in our lives. Because of its infinite nature, it is all knowing. Rei can also be called God and has many other names depending on the culture that has named it.

Ki is the non physical energy that animates all living things when your Ki is high- You feel energised, confident, and ready to enjoy life and take on its challenges. When it is low, you will feel weak and are more likely to get sick. We receive Ki from the air we breathe and from the food we eat. You can also increase Ki in the body by doing breathing exercises and meditation.

Reiki can be defined as a non-physical healing energy, a life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence. While practitioners channel and direct the energy through their hands, Reiki energy seems to have an intelligence of its own flowing where it is needed in the client and creating the healing conditions necessary for the individual's needs.

Reiki cannot be guided by the mind. Therefore the experience or ability of the practitioner does not limit it. Neither can it be misused, as it always creates a healing effect. The source or cause of health comes from the Ki that flows through and around the individual rather than from the functional condition of the physical organs and tissues. It is Ki that animates the physical organs and tissues as it flows through them and therefore is responsible for creating a healthy condition.

How do Blockages occur and develop illness?

If the flow of Ki is disrupted, the physical organs and tissues in that area will be adversely affected. Therefore, it is a disruption in the flow of Ki that is the main cause of illness. An important attribute of Ki is that it responds to one's thoughts and feelings. Ki will flow more strongly or be weakened in its action depending on the quality of one's thoughts and feelings.

It is our negative thoughts and feelings that are the main cause of restriction in the flow of Ki. All negative thoughts or feelings will cause a disruption in the flow of Ki. Western medicine recognises the role played by the mind in creating illness and some Western doctors state that as much as 98% of illness is caused directly or indirectly by the mind.

It must be understood that the mind exists not only in the brain, but also throughout the body. The nervous system extends to every organ and tissue in the body. And so the mind exists here also. It is also known that the mind even extends outside the body in a subtle energy field,(mentioned above) called the aura. Because of this it is more appropriate to call our mind a mind/body as they are so closely linked. Therefore our negative thoughts are not just in the brain, but also collected in various locations throughout the body and in the aura.

The places where the negative thoughts and feelings collect is where Ki is restricted in its flow. The physical organs that exist at these locations are restricted in their functioning. If the negative thoughts and feelings are not eliminated quickly, illness results. The negative thoughts and feelings that are lodged in the unconscious mind/body are the greatest problem as we are not aware of them and therefore we are greatly hampered in changing or eliminating them. Reiki knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the flow of Ki. It can work directly in the unconscious parts of the mind /body which contain negative Ki inhibiting thoughts and feelings and eliminate them.

What does Reiki do?

Reiki flows through a sick or unhealthy area; it breaks up and washes away any negative thoughts or feelings lodged in your unconscious mind/body, thus allowing a normal, healthy flow of Ki to resume. As this happens the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and begin functioning in a balanced & healthy way, thus replacing illness with health. This non-invasive, completely benign healing technique has become popular as Western medicine continues to explore alternative methods of healing. Reiki has begun to play an important role as an accepted and valued healing practice.

As mentioned above, our thoughts and feelings are the main cause of restriction in the flow of Ki so it is important to note that if you increase the flow of Ki, there will be an opportunity for new thoughts and ideas also to occur. A great practice to keep in mind is that if we work on affirmations, thoughts, meditation and breathwork while receiving energy healing, we will greatly improve our lives and chances for reaching a different energetic frequency- in turn completely changing our life experience as we know it. As mentioned above, when our Ki is flowing freely, we will experience more confidence and energy to take on life's challenges; however when it is restricted, we will feel weak and won’t have any motivation for our everyday challenges and things will feel much heavier for us.

What happens during a session?

During a Reiki session, the practitioner channels the energy. They do this by bringing the energy down through their crown and into their hands and out into the person’s energy field to provide the healing.

Different healers have different gifts depending on their own unique abilities. My extra sensory gift is that I can feel things strongly even though I may not know why. Do you ever experience a strong gut feeling? do you visualise things really well? Whatever your stronger sense is, that would be what would develop as your intuitive guidance for performing Reiki.

Intuition, meaning inner teaching. This is a way we can perceive the energy- beyond the rational conscious mind.

During my sessions, I have the person lay on the bed- fully clothed. I have blankets, pillows and an eye pillow(optional) to help my clients relax into the experience. I only touch a few parts of the body while performing a session eg. Feet, Knees, Shoulders, Head, Neck, Arms and Hands. The rest of the time I work in the Aura around the body to provide the healing.

I normally start by holding the feet and connecting to the person's energy. I will scan the energetic system through the aura- normally placing my hands about 15-30cm above the physical body. Once I have connected and scanned the system, I will clear out any perceived blockages and then guide the Reiki Energy through their energetic system to assist with any further clearing of blocks and lower vibrational frequencies.

What does a person experience during all of this?

  • Generally people feel relaxed

  • Some feel warmth/ heat coming from my hands

  • Some feel cool energy flowing through them

  • Some feel a tingling sensation

  • Some feel a floating sensation

  • Some people see colours or flashes of light when their eyes are closed

People's experiences vary and the list is a lot longer but these are the most common sensations. It really depends on the person and their main sense of perception.

At the end I Ground the person's energy into the present and surround them with a protective bubble so that they can remain in that relaxed state for as long as possible. I give advice for home-care and for them based on the blockages they have been experiencing. Sometimes people are aware of the reasons behind their blockages but other times it could be subconscious. Either way the Reiki will work to improve every client's overall sense of well-being.

I have also started a combo package for Reiki with Massage. I have found this personally to be very beneficial for my clients to help with relaxation and stress relief as the Reiki is activated in my hands for the massage also, providing a total wellness experience energetically and physically in one- doubling up on the effects of both treatments.

Important point to know about Reiki

Reiki is not coming from the practitioner themselves. When a person decides to learn how to become a Reiki healer they have to attune to the vibration of the Reiki. On their training day, the Reiki Master will perform an attunement to the Reiki Energy.

There are different levels of Reiki Practitioners:

  • Level 1: You will be able to heal yourself

  • Level 2: A stronger attunement as you become a clearer channel, you can then channel more energy to heal others

  • Level 3 or The Master level, you will be attuned to a higher level and you will then be able to teach others about Reiki and provide attunements for those who want to start their journeys.

Once the practitioner is attuned to the Reiki energy, they can channel the energy through their own chakra system and out through their hands to provide the Energy healing. Every time a person gets attuned to the energy they will clear out a lot of blockages in their own system so that they become a clear channel so that they will be able to channel the energy more efficiently for others to receive it.

The energy channelled to the client through the practitioner's hands. We each have Chakras in our own hands and naturally already use them without realising it.

  • Have you ever had a pain in your head or your back?

  • What do you do automatically?

You put your hand on it and it helps to soothe the pain- that’s also a form of Reiki and self healing. The only difference with a practitioner is that they have been attuned to channel higher levels of the Universal Life Force Energy- in turn providing healing for their clients.
